The muffuletta was created by Italian immigrants in New Orleans. The olive salad soaks into the bread.

Wrap it and press it for an hour before slicing.

Method

  1. Mix the olives, peppers, capers, oil and vinegar to make the olive salad.
  2. Cut the loaf in half and scoop out some of the soft middle.
  3. Spread half the olive salad on the base, then layer the meats and cheese.
  4. Add the rest of the salad and the top of the loaf.
  5. Wrap tightly and press under a weight for 1 hour. Cut into wedges.
